Sudanese Refugee Day

“Despite being marred by some intra-communal tensions within the Sudanese refugee community, AUC’s World Refugee Day was a ‘great success.’”
-Daily Star http://www.dailystaregypt.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=7768

AUC hosted World Refugee Day, and people were killed by police. This is the only article that gives any detail.
The situation of the over 900,000 Sudanese refugees pouring into Egypt is deplorable. They cannot get employment, and they get no assistance, health care, and they live in horrible conditions.
There were rumors over the past few days that a Sudanese man died at the gathering. The truth is much worse.
There are two main gangs within the Sudanese refugee community here in Cairo. Some kids from one gang were performing on stage when kids from the other came to the event to watch. Some of the kids may have been high, but they were watching the others perform peacefully.
Suddenly five or more vans of police pulled up. Police with guns and machetes jumped out and started to comb through the crowd, arresting anyone who looked Sudanese.
Over 70 people were arrested. Some people’s whereabouts are still not confirmed; others are in jails across the country. One man’s head was chopped in half by a machete. Another died after having his arm chopped off.
The day meant to raise awareness about the Sudanese plight in Cairo did not end in celebration as planned. It ended with bloodshed. The only media outlet that so much as mentioned the event, calls it a “great success.” I am disgusted.
